When the Collective Ideal Changes Direction

Neptune’s Long Arc and the Spark of a New Era

In astrological thought, the beginning of the zodiac, the so called Aries Point, functions as a structural turning point where the theme shifts from ending to beginning. Unlike the signs at the end of the zodiac, which gather, dissolve and complete, Aries opens a new cycle: it signifies movement, initiative and the first phase of a new beginning.

Neptune, a slow moving planet that shapes generations, acts as a long term background influence on cultural ideals, collective values and societal currents. Its cycles do not describe individual events but point toward broad developments that shape generational mindsets and the symbolic orders of societies. Neptune, like other planetary cycles, offers a way to examine time that resembles futures studies: by analysing past turning points, identifying recurring patterns and applying evaluation and reasoning, one can construct scenarios of possible futures.

Neptune’s cycle does not provide ready made answers; rather, it offers a framework for examining what kinds of themes, values and phenomena have emerged in similar phases before. When these recurring patterns are compared with current developments, it becomes possible to outline scenarios of the cultural, technological or societal transitions the coming years may contain. This is about using temporal rhythm as an analytical tool, much like studying long term economic cycles or historical megatrends.

In this blog, I examine Neptune’s arc from the mid 1980s onward: from Capricorn through Aquarius and Pisces to Aries, where Neptune has now settled until early 2039. This broader perspective helps illuminate the themes that have emerged in each period, and what they might teach us today.

Neptune in Capricorn 1984–1998

The dissolution of structures (Capricorn) and the breaking of the illusion of order (Capricorn)

The period of Neptune in Capricorn coincided with a time of structural and institutional upheaval: political and economic systems collapsed, trust in traditional institutions faltered, and major ideological shifts reshaped the global order. Many political and economic structures came under critical scrutiny, and the apparent permanence of institutions and systems dissolved. The fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the early stages of globalisation revealed that stability was often more an ideological narrative than an actual condition.

The “casino economy” of the 1980s exemplifies an ideology that emphasised market self regulation and the minimisation of the state’s role. Financial deregulation, rapid indebtedness and speculative investment were seen as part of the natural dynamics of the economy, as if the market’s own logic would generate prosperity without central oversight. This aligns closely with the symbolism of Neptune in Capricorn: economic structures blurred, risks were masked as optimism, and the economic system became a kind of collective fantasy in which growth appeared limitless and warning signs faded. The exuberance of the casino years was a Neptunian illusion, a moment when economic reality and economic dream merged.

At the same time, the rise of so called fuzzy logic from the mid 1980s onward reflected a growing need for methods capable of handling uncertainty and imprecise values. Increasing computational power, expanding automation and the early stages of artificial intelligence created a technological environment where non binary thinking became both relevant and necessary. The globalising economy and the risk taking ethos of the casino years provided fertile cultural ground for this shift.

During the Neptune in Capricorn phase, what no longer held up became visible. A void emerged, one into which subsequent eras could project new visions. It was a time of dismantling and revelation, when structural truths surfaced.

Neptune in Aquarius 1998–2011

Mapping Networks (Aquarius) and Imagining Alternative Futures (Aquarius)

The period of Neptune in Aquarius shifted attention away from the dismantling of structures toward envisioning new societal and technological possibilities. The rise of the internet, the emergence of digital networks and the strengthening of global movements created a new collective imagination of connection, one no longer dependent on physical structures.

From the late 1990s to the mid 2000s, digital culture moved from the margins to the mainstream: the internet spread rapidly, and new services and platforms emerged on top of it: Google (1998), Wikipedia (2001), Facebook (2004), YouTube (2005) and Twitter (2006). Early smartphones and mobile networks created continuous connectivity, turning the web into an everyday infrastructure. At the same time, social media began reshaping communication, community and the ways information circulated, while early cloud services laid the groundwork for the digital ecosystems that would follow.

Power began to decentralise, and community became network based. During Neptune in Aquarius, the horizon widened: it became increasingly clear that society could organise itself in ways previous generations could not have imagined. It was a time of visions and alternative futures.

Nokia’s rise from the early 1990s to the early 2000s offers a striking example of the Neptune in Capricorn to Neptune in Aquarius transition. During Neptune in Capricorn, old political and economic structures collapsed, the Cold War ended, and Finland’s own economic crisis forced the company to dismantle its old industrial identity and build a new strategy around telecommunications. When Neptune entered Aquarius, the era of digital networks and mobile technology opened, and Nokia became a global icon precisely in the environment where connectivity, the mainstreaming of the internet and the transformation of mobile communication created a new societal infrastructure. Nokia’s story reflects how the dissolution of structures (Capricorn) and the emergence of networks (Aquarius) can together generate new forms of agency and technological leadership.

Neptune in Pisces 2011–2026

The Dissolution of Identity (Pisces) and the Softening of Norms (Pisces)

The recently concluded Neptune in Pisces era turned collective attention inward: toward identity, belonging and the experience of boundaries. Key themes of the period included the diversification of identities, the softening of norms and the redefinition of cultural categories as concepts of gender, sexuality, ethnicity and community became more fluid, and the “self” began to appear layered and continually shifting. The era did not construct a new identity; rather, it dissolved the old and revealed that many supposedly stable categories were cultural agreements; liberating, yet also sources of uncertainty.

This dissolution of boundaries manifested concretely in the COVID 19 pandemic, which exposed global vulnerability and generated a worldwide culture of care and grief. Simultaneously, refugee crises and humanitarian sensitivity challenged nation state identities and highlighted the political dimension of compassion. The era also turned inward psychologically: mental health, trauma and exhaustion entered public discourse, while spiritual practices and resilience building gained prominence.

At the same time, the boundaries between truth and illusion blurred through disinformation, conspiracy theories and algorithmic bubbles. In art and culture, escapism, fantasy and the aesthetics of inner worlds flourished as streaming platforms became a new cultural infrastructure. The climate crisis also gained an emotional dimension through ecological grief and anxiety, accompanied by new forms of solidarity that crossed traditional boundaries.

The Neptune in Pisces period dissolved both structures and identities, creating a boundless, emotionally charged space from which the current Neptune in Aries era can begin to build something new, not by dismantling, but by actively creating and rapidly reshaping identity and agency.

Neptune in Aries 2026–2039

What Developments Might the Current Neptune in Aries Era Generate?

Neptune’s transition into Aries in January 2026 opened a new era of collective ideals. We now live in a world shaped by networks, permeated by artificial intelligence and defined by the multiplicity of identities. In light of historical examples, we can outline scenarios for the kinds of openings the 2026–2039 Neptune in Aries phase may produce.

1. Technological Agency Rising Alongside Geopolitics
- Competition between states may increasingly shift toward technological infrastructures, data governance and AI development.
- Technological agency may begin to define political identity as strongly as traditional military or economic power.
- New “technological blocs” may emerge that do not follow old geographical boundaries.

2. Identity Reconstructed at the Digital–Physical Interface
- The identity dissolution of the Neptune in Pisces era may transform into identity reconstruction under Neptune in Aries.
- Digital and physical selves may intertwine in ways that challenge existing definitions of what a “person” is.
- Law and culture may need to redefine agency, responsibility and privacy.

3. A Reordering of the Human–AI Relationship
- AI may serve as the mirror of the era, much as science did at the dawn of the Enlightenment.
- Concepts of creativity, autonomy and decision making may shift as AI becomes both collaborator and challenger.
- New ethical and philosophical questions will emerge about what is “human” and what constitutes “shared” intelligence.

4. New Technological Initiatives and Breakthroughs
- The era may produce innovations as foundational as the emergence of electrical engineering in the 19th century.
- Developments may ignite rapidly and spread globally, especially at the intersections of energy, biotechnology and AI.
- Aries’ impulsive quality may manifest as rapid experimentation and bold technological initiatives.

5. A Shift in Art Toward Immersive and Co Created Forms
- Art may move toward embodied, immersive, multisensory and AI co created modes of expression.
- New aesthetics may emerge quickly and spread widely as technology enables collective creation.
- Art may function as a laboratory for experimenting with the identities and realities of the new era.

6. New Forms of Social Movements and Collective Action
- Movements may arise within days and spread globally without traditional structures.
- Responses may be rapid and spontaneously organised, emerging before situations are fully analysed or theorised.
- New forms of solidarity may cross national, cultural and generational boundaries.

Neptune in Aries is not about a finished form but about a beginning. Neptune in Aries provides the spark and sometimes that first spark is enough to ignite an entire era. Perhaps this time as well.
